Orchid Mantis (Hymenopus coronatus) - Malaysia

From Wikipedia:

This species is characterized by brilliant and beautiful coloring and unusual structure; their four walking legs resemble flower petals, and the coloration of the bodies tends to match the environment in which they were raised. H. coronatus shows some of the most pronounced sexual dimorphism of any species of mantis; the males are generally less than half the size of the females. Young nymphs resemble ants with orange and black bodies. As the mantis grows in its environment, its color comes to more closely match the coloration of its surroundings with each passing molt. It has been theorized that humidity and intensity of light play a large role in the final coloration of the adult.

  • (I work in a Coffee Shop. I was on break in the lobby when a couple walks in. Directly behind them is a cute little boy in Batman costume.)
  • Me: “Oh my God! It’s BATMAN!”
  • (The boy stops, strikes a pose and starts looking around menacingly. After a few seconds, he approaches the counter.)
  • Mother: “Jeff, would you like a chocolate milk?”
  • Boy: “I am not Jeff. I am The Batman.”
  • Mother: “The Batman, would you like a chocolate milk?”
  • Boy: “Yes. Yes, The Batman would.”
  • (The couple pays while the boy sits down with his chocolate milk. He keeps a stern look on his face as he sips the drink.)
  • Boy: *sips* “Gotham is safe.”

Regardless where you stand on immigration issues, a border fence, amnesty, etc., or on same-sex marriage and equal rights for LGBT citizens, how can you be in favor of making it easier to commit violence against LGBT or immigrant women? I cannot believe our national debate has come to this point – where we are singling out parts of the population and making them more vulnerable to violence.

Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) criticized the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act saying the bill passed on Wednesday puts women’s lives in jeopardy because it excludes access to services for immigrant, LGBT and Native American women.  (via nbclatino)

I mean, “singling out parts of the population and making them more vulnerable to violence” is what institutional oppression is - it’s just not always as visible as this.

But yes, this whole thing is fucking ridiculous.

Playing Arkham City with a 3 year old

  • Cayda [three years old and holding a non connected controller]: Where's the Joker?
  • Me [actually playing Arkham City]: I don't know, we gotta find him because he's sick
  • Cayda: I hope he's not dead. I love the Joker more than Batman. Because Batman is a bad guy.
  • Me: Uhm...no, Joker is the bad guy.
  • Cayda: NO. You are wrong [sees Harley Quinn] Who's that?
  • Me: The Joker's girlfriend.
  • Cayda [glares at the screen and then presses buttons on her controller furiously]: ....
  • Me: ....
  • Me: ...whatcha doing there?
  • Cayda: Imma kill her. No one can have the Joker but me, 'cuz, he's mine.
  • Me: ......
  • Me: .............
  • Me: I think it's time to go to bed.
  • Little girl after my own heart.. She still can't have Joker.. MINE!
